Hi Everyone

August has been a really busy month for FHSST!

1) Hackathons
2) Case Study on FHSST

1) August was a great month for Hackathons. The first hackathon of the month was held on 23 August, (a Thursday evening) from 4.30 until about 10.00pm in the Shuttleworth Linux Lab on Upper Campus at the University of Cape Town. The hackathon was really well attended and lots of new worked examples and exercises have been uploaded onto the site - much to the appreciation of the editors! Of course, we also provided free pizza and soda to keep up the volunteer energy levels - photos will go up on the FHSST site soon.
We plan to hold hackathons EVERY 2nd THURSDAY (with one happening next week, 6 September) FROM 4.30 - till late AT THE SHUTTLEWORTH LAB ON UCT UPPER CAMPUS. If you would like to help out but are not a UCT student, please let us know and we will try to organise a login account at the lab for you. It's much more fun to work together than sit at home alone - so please join us!

The second hackathon was a very special one in that it was initiated and hosted by the SASOL Junior Engineers forum at the Secunda plant on 29 August. A full day was devoted to the hackathon by the Junior Engineers. We are very excited that volunteers are forming their own hubs across the country to help FHSST develop the remaining urgently needed content! We appreciate the contribution from the Junior Engineers, especially Kati Gastrow, enormously. Mark went up to take part and help out at the Secunda Hackathon and had a great time. Again, it was very productive and we would like to thank everyone who helped out and took part there.

2) During this month, we also ran a survey where volunteers could give their feedback on what it's like to be a contributor to the FHSST project. The information has helped to inform a Case Study project being done on FHSST by the Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education (ISKME). The aim of the case study is to provide information and highlight tools which can be used by other Open Education Resource projects to get started and be as productive as possible. It's also helped us identify areas where we can improve on things and so we would like to thank all of you who filled out the questionnaires. The Case Study overview will be made public soon - we'll send the link when it's up.

So that was August! Hopefully September will prove to be even more exciting and productive!
We are on track to finish Maths, Chem and Physics by the end of the year if we can keep up the volunteer contributions so please stick with us for the next 4 months and we'll have these books out there making a massive difference in education.
See you at the hackathons!

Cheers
Sarah
