Hi Everyone
We're into the final month of 2007 and the home straight in terms of finishing our Maths and Physical Science books! Over the past couple of months we've held a record number of hackathons. Every Tuesday evening of October and most of November was spent in the computer labs at the University of Cape Town with a great group of student volunteers, churning out edits fueled by the free pizza!
Currently, we have a group of volunteers working through the university vacation finishing outstanding editing - and we're on track to finish by the end of the year. Next there'll be some intensive proofreading required, some final editing and then the books will hopefully be printed early in 2008. It's been a long slog, but thanks to lots of dedicated and excellent volunteers, this project is finally nearing completion (at least on our first set of books!).
Once the maths and science books are done, we plan to add the functionality to our website to allow new groups (from other countries) to make copies of the books and begin editing for their countries' contexts. We would also be very happy if, once the books are finished, people would be interested in starting a translation project of the books into Afrikaans (specifically for South Africa) or other languages. If anyone is interested, please contact us.
On the Life Sciences front - there are lots of assignments available to be written, so please take advantage of the Christmas holidays and send in a contribution! Every small bit helps enormously!
We'd like to thank our editors and volunteers for a great year and excellent work. The books are really coming together now and it wouldn't have been possible without the contributions of so many people.
All the best for the festive season! More news next year!
Cheers
Sarah
